Mirena IUD – Migrations, Perforations & Surgery

At Pulaski & Law Firm, we get hundreds of emails per month from women who have had bad experiences with the Mirena IUD.

These are actual statements from women who have written to us. Of course, the names have been changed to protect their identities.

Mary, 29, from Georgia – “I had Mirena placed in 2010. Web I went back to make sure it was placed my doctors told me it had fallen out. Through the months of may 2010 until December 2010 I had excruciating stomach pains. I went to the ER on December 31 2010 where they did an z ray fining the Mirena on my bladder. I was scheduled for surgery the following week. During surgery the Mirena had moved again and migrated up my omentum. Creating a four hour surgery. In the process they tied my tubes allowing me to not be able to conceive again. I had continued to have abnormal bleeding and stomach pains following this whole ordeal. I feel compromised as a woman and was at risk for not knowing about the product perforating my uterus and traveling. Please email me. What can I do?”

Jenny, 33, from Texas – “The IUD perforated my uterus and migrated to the outside lining. This caused extreme pain. My doctor performed an ultrasound & an X-ray to determine the location of the IUD. I underwent laparoscopy to remove the device. This was done as an outpatient surgery. The doctor did not charge me for the surgery, but I did have to pay around $700 for the IUD because my insurance didn’t cover it. After removal, I then had to pay for another form of birth control on top of paying for the IUD.”

Talia, 40, from Florida – “I was having pain in the left lower part of my stomach for months and doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me until I went to a new OB doctor who found that the IUD was not in my uterus and had an x-ray performed and found that the IUD had ended up in my abdomen and not in my uterus. I had surgery to remove it from its location.”

Dee Dee, 42, from Illinois – “On or about May 5, 1998 or 1999 I had an IUD placed, I am not sure if it was a Mirena IUD or another type. I immediately suffered pain and became quite ill. I contacted my physician who kept prescribing stronger pain medications and did examine me once and said the IUD was still in place. However, I became sicker and sicker and in more pain. On May 19, I saw a different physician who examined me and could not find the IUD, upon an ultra sound being done, the IUD was seen floating outside of my uterus. He performed surgery the next day and found the IUD after it had pricked my appendix which resulted in a tremendous amount of infection and several organs basically melting together. The doctor removed my appendix and cleaned all of my internal organs. He said I was knocking on Heaven’s door and if I had waited one more day, I probably would not be alive. “

Heather, 35, from Maryland – “Within a few weeks of having the device placed I began to experience severe pain that increased when bending and sitting. The pain kept getting worse and the pain was eventually around my hip. 6 weeks later I had an x-ray to diagnose the pain and it was found that the device perforated the uterus and had lodged around my left illiac crest pop over to this website. I had surgery to have it removed. Less then 3 years later I had a partial hysterectomy possibly due to the scarring from the device.”
